Wtich Hat Atelier
Jun. 1st, 2024 04:55 pmI've been reading a lot of comics lately (particularly since the main book I'm reading right now is 1243 pages long, so I haven't been taking it out with me when travelling) and my most recent discovery is the manga series - Witch Hat Atelier, which came highly recommended by Elliot Brooks on YouTube.
I've completed Volumes 1-6 and am going to take a break before continuing, so I thought I'd review up to there.
I love this series.
It's about a world where witches are held in high regard and the general populace are told you have to be born a witch to be able to do magic. But a young girl called Coco witnesses something she shouldn't, discovers a secret the witches have been keeping, and accidentally causes harm to someone she loves by playing with dangerous forces she doesn't understand. As a consequence, she is invited to become an apprentice to Master Quifrey, who runs an atelier in the countryside for three other young apprentices.
The series follows Coco on her journey to become a fully-fledged witch, but there are other forces at play, since the opposing Brimmed Cap witches seem to be taking an unusual interest in her progress.
It's fun, exciting, funny, sweet, intriguing...
I love all the different inter-relationships between the characters, and all the layers of the different factions both within the Pointed Cap witch enclave and outside it. There's obviously a lot more going on than the reader is aware of by the end of Volume 6. Many questions are raised about which side is in the right, and what the ulterior motives and hidden secrets of various of the characters might be.
Really great stuff.
