Written In Fire and The Sacred Cave
Oct. 15th, 2023 07:49 pmWritten in Fire is the third in the Brilliance trilogy by Marcus Sakey and I largely enjoyed the conclusion to the story. The relationships were handled very well, I thought, and the overall plot was exciting and suspenseful. I was particularly impressed that Sakey made me feel really sorry for one of the worst bad guys (I didn't condone his actions but I completely understood his reasons for them and what happened to him in the end made me quite sad). My only issue is that the very end provided what seemed like a lead-in to another instalment - but there isn't one! Still, a pretty good series overall.
Today, we went to see The Sacred Cave, an animated movie from Cameroon, in French with subtitles. The animation style was a bit simple for me, and the story definitely had some holes in it. But I found the main characters engaging, some of it was quite funny, other bits of it were quite affecting and I thought it was entertaining overall. The quality of the subtitles was a bit lacking, though - some of them didn't make a lot of sense and my French is good enough that I spotted a few pretty clunky translations. What was really amusing was that, in a couple of places, the subtitle read 'Nouveau Legende', which presumably meant they need a new subtitle added and hadn't managed to put it in before the film was released! The cinema had someone reading out the subtitles over headphones for anyone who was going to have trouble reading them, so her job must have been a bit weird and tricky in places! Still, a good afternoon's outing!
