The People on Platform 5 by Clare Pooley was recommended to me by another author at a literary event and I added it to my library reservations straight away.

I love the concept - a disparate group of people who always take the same train break the cardinal rule of commuting and (for various reasons) and start talking to each other. The connections between them grow over time into a beautiful story of honesty, support, community and following dreams.

The opening really resonated with me as the various commuters had different nicknames for each other (because they'd seen each other every day on the train but didn't know anything about each other), which is something my husband and I used to do when we were commuting too (and it makes me wonder what nicknames other commuters had for me!).

Throughout the first half, it all felt just a bit too quirky to me and the characters didn't really click as believable people to start with - but it really picked up in the second half and I loved how it all eventually came together.
