The Secret Hours
Aug. 9th, 2023 01:59 pmI picked up another couple of books by Santa Montefiore in my latest charity shop haul - but it turns out The Secret Hours is number four in the Deverill Chronicles series, and the other one I picked up is number one and I didn't realise! So now I've totally spoilered myself for the first one - but it doesn't matter because I can pass both of them on to my mum, with instructions to fill the gaps if she likes the first one!
Anyway, The Secret Hours is unusual in this genre (woman discovers mystery in family past and travels to ancestor's distant home to discover secrets) in that the protagonist, Faye, is 58, rather than being in her mid-twenties. This was a refreshing change, which I very much enjoyed. I liked her as a character and I enjoyed her journey to self-discovery, alongside the gradual reveal of her mother's early life in Ireland.
The book is put together very well, with both storylines having enough to keep the reader interested, so neither drags.
So, now I've got two in the Santa Montefiore positive column, one so-so and one negative, so she's swung back towards me thinking I might read more if I come across them.
