Across A Field Of Starlight by Blue Delliquanti is a graphic novel about two non-binary teenagers who meet in strange circumstances on an alien planet and strike up a friendship that spans their galaxy.

Fassen is recruited into a rebellion force, fighting against the Ever-Blossoming Empire, while Lu does deep-space research for their secluded commune, which has rules against getting involved in any external conflict.

The cast of characters is wonderfully diverse in terms of gender, body type, skin tone, orientation, etc - all of which is just part of the background and not made any fuss about - something I really enjoyed.

There are factions and layers of allegiance and commitment to causes, moral dilemmas, space battles, varied ship and habitat types, and an elderly auntie who knits scratchy jumpers. It got unexpectedly very funny and also very poignant and deep in the second half, particularly when dealing with Fassen's deeply engrained sense of inadequacy and trying to communicate empathy to a very powerful AI.

I think some of the nuances of the plot may have escaped me - there's a lot going on and a lot of information thrown at you at speed - but I loved this book overall.
