The musical version of Heathers probably wouldn't have been my first choice of shows to go and see - but it turned out to be pretty good! It was well put together, the entire cast was committed and there were some really good singers among them.
The story actually leant itself well to the format, though I felt it took a while to really get going.
My only issue was with tone. I guess it's difficult to deal with issues around suicide, abuse and murder and keep a show from being really heavy. But - there were a few occasions where I felt the tone was a little off. For several songs, the characters advocating quite important ideas about tolerance, inclusiveness and mental wellbeing were presented as comic in some way, thus inviting the audience to laugh at them and perhaps dismiss what they were trying to put across.
It almost felt like the show was trying to hedge its bets in some way - to appeal both to the people who would support and the people who would ridicule those things.
Perhaps I'm overthinking it. Overall, I did enjoy the show.
