Knife Children
May. 23rd, 2022 09:21 pmI went into this audiobook of the final instalment of the Sharing Knife series by Lois McMaster Bujold, assuming it would be about the children of the main couple from the earlier books - Dag and Faun. So, I was very surprised to discover it was actually all about Barr, a peripheral Lakewalker character from the other books, and the farmer-born daughter he didn't know he had.
It's a pretty short book, but packs a lot in - mostly about familial relationships of various kinds, and the consequences of leaving an unexpected legacy. I enjoyed Barr's viewpoint narration, especially his bewilderment at suddenly having to deal with a 14-year-old girl, who is just discovering she has Lakewalker powers.
All the characters are well-drawn, the tone is entertainingly wry and self-aware, the progress of the plot is interesting, and it was fun to spend some more time in this fascinating world.
