Grow: Song of the Evertree
Apr. 18th, 2022 01:06 pmI've recently spent a lot of time playing Grow: Song of the Evertree, a game made by the same company as The Cloud Catcher Chronicles.
It had some similarities - open world map, clear to-do list of tasks, some missions that advanced the overarching plot, and a fair amount of farming-style gardening. This game also had a town-building aspect on top of everything else.
There were some improvements over the earlier game - most importantly being a reliable way to travel from one part of the map to another, plus it was much easier to navigate on foot.
The farming aspect was also a lot of fun and had a greater sense of progression than in the other game - you had to create 'world seeds' by combining different components and then plant them on the Evertree. There would be daily gardening tasks (pulling up weeds, planting seeds, watering plants, clearing debris, etc) and the worlds would gradually grow and develop in different ways, depending on the type of world seed they were born from.
There were also intermittent platformer-style adventures, with logic puzzles to be solve, in order to find song fragments that opened up new areas of the map and the tree.
Overall, I think the game has a great combination of different types of gameplay, enough plot to remain interesting, and enough flexibility to allow players to focus on the aspects they most enjoy. I sunk about 48 hours into the game before completing the main plot, but there was still plenty more town development and gardening to do, if I wanted to be completist about finishing it off.
Really good value, and a lot of fun.
