Thurn and Taxis
Last night, we played Thurn and Taxis online with a couple of friends.
It's one of those 'train games' that doesn't have anything to do with trains - in fact, it's about building postal service routes across Bavaria.
Each turn basically consists of selecting a town from your available cards and adding it to a route you're building on the board. Once you've connected a certain number of towns, you can claim your route, add post offices to some or all of the towns on it, and upgrade your carriage.
You get bonus points based on the level of carriage you've reached, the number of towns on your routes, and the number and pattern of post offices you've placed.
It's one of those games that's very simple to learn, but difficult to play well. I really enjoyed it, and not just because I won! It appealed to various aspects of gameplay I like (routes, patterns, having a range of objectives to aim for) and it was interesting because there was no hidden information. Player actions don't impact on each other a huge amount (you can't get in each other's way, but you can take cards that others might have their eye on), which I also liked.
A good game that I'd definitely like to play again.
