A very good start to my reading year in 2021, with The Disappeared by Kristine Kathryn Rusch, which was a Christmas present.

It introduces Miles Flint, a detective on the moon, who gets involved in several cases all at once, all involving humans who are fleeing the harsh justice of different alien cultures by using a disappearance service to provide them with new lives and identities.

The book does an excellent job of making you care about the victims right from the start, providing snapshots of their varying situations, before moving mainly to the point of view of Miles for the rest of the book. The characters are well-drawn, the world is well-realised, and the plot is intriguing. I very much got drawn into the story and was invested in both the characters and finding out how it was all going to come together.

It's very much a set-up book for the series to continue with Miles in a different role from here on out. But it still managed to be a compelling self-contained story, as well as providing the background for a larger series to come.

I've already ordered book two and am also looking forward to trying out some of Rusch's other series, as she has written a lot. So, an excellent introduction to an author is is new to me but has a large back catalogue of work for me to enjoy!
