The Sharing Knife: Beguilement
Dec. 24th, 2020 09:57 amI'd previously listened to a couple of books by Lois McMaster Bujold and enjoyed them. I was at a friend's house recently and spotted several on the bookshelves, which prompted me to look up some more. So, I came to the first in The Sharing Knife series, which follows Fawn, who runs away from home after being rejected by her lover, and ends up finding far more than she bargained for when she is abducted by the inhuman servants of a monster that is terrorising the area. She is rescued by Dag, a patroller tasked with finding and killing such monsters, and they eventually face it together.
But all that happens in the opening chapters - so the beginning is very action-packed and exciting. And then the rest of the book is about their burgeoning relationship and how it is perceived by Fawn's family when they travel to her parents' farm to let them know she's okay.
And I loved it!
I loved the development of the relationship, I loved the alternating points of view that allowed insight into both characters, I loved the way they navigated the various obstacles in their path, and I loved the fact that the majority of the book was about them finding themselves in each other, rather than racing about having wild adventures.
They didn't even reach the main destination for their journey, which was a surprise, but which means I am very much looking forward to listening to the rest of the series to find out what happens next.
