Enola Holmes
Sep. 28th, 2020 08:20 amEnola Holmes imagines that Sherlock has a little sister, whose education up to the age of 16 has been eclectic and eccentric, and administered entirely by their mother, played by Helena Bonham Carter. When the mother disappears, Enola sets out to find her, while Sherlock and Mycroft want to bring their sister back into polite society.
Overall, the film was fun and entertaining. Millie Bobby Brown was great, though the rest of the cast felt a bit flat (especially Henry Cavill), some of the dialogue was sharply written and amusing, the countryside was gorgeous, and the setting of 1900 richly evoked.
But I spent a lot of time thinking - but how did she...? why did they...? what was the point of...? And that detracted from my enjoyment somewhat.
And, while it was great to see Susan Wokoma in a period piece, her character served no purpose, which made her feel rather tokenistic. Plus, the huge diversity amongst the extras just served to emphasise that all but two of the speaking characters were white (and those two were very minor).
So, fun but not without its flaws.
