Next on the Novel Predictions list was On The Edge by Ilona Andrews (which turns out to be a pseudonym for a husband and wife team, kind of unusual on the urban fantasy romance front, as far as I know). The cover of the book is *terrible* and was really offputting, plus I haven't had a huge amount of luck in the urban fantasy genre (apart from the Dresden Files, which is more mystery with magic).

But I really enjoyed it!

It's about a young woman called Rose, who struggles to look after her young brothers in a precarious strip of land between the mortal and magical realms, called the Edge. George is a ten-year-old necromancer and Jack is an eight-year-old shapeshifter, and they both get in lots of trouble while Rose tries to hold their family together and make a living.

Enter Declan, who is a blueblood from the magical realm and initially presents himself as a total asshat, demanding that Rose immediately marry him and go back with him. I wasn't sure it would be credible for him to become a valid love interest, but he did (not a massive spoiler in a romance novel). There was also a lot of interesting magic stuff, some icky monsters, some exciting action and a lot of peril.

The kids were great, and worked very well to demonstrate different sides of the protagonists. And the romance developed very much more along the lines of gender equality and the woman getting things on her own terms than I expected from the opening.

This isn't a series I'm going to carry on with, but this was a fun read.
