She-Ra and the Princesses of Power
Jan. 3rd, 2019 06:45 pmListening to Feminist Frequency Radio introduced me to a recent revamp of She-Ra, a cartoon series I remember fondly from my childhood. The FemFreq ladies had a lot of good things to say about it, so I fired up Netflix and decided to give it a try.
And it's awesome! There are thirteen episodes of 25 minutes each, and there is so much packed into the series, I don't really know where to begin. Some of it is utterly ridiculous (in a good way) but there's also a huge amount of complexity. The writing is excellent, and there are tons of layers to the stories. There's a lot about indoctrination, loyalty, family, betrayal, finding a place to belong (even if it's not a healthy place to be), self-worth, purpose - the list goes on. It's a largely female cast, containing multitudes of different personalities, skillsets, body types and roles. Most of the characters have tons of depth and a lot of them get really interesting individual arcs.
And it's incredibly gay - in the best possible way. There's so much subtext to the way the characters interact - none of it is explicit, but a lot of it is very difficult to interpret any other way.
My two favourite characters are Scorpia, who has giant scorpion claws and a tail with a stinger, and it also definitely the most attractive from my point of view. She seems to just want to be loved and appreciated (don't we all) and is often overlooked. And then there's Entrapta, who is all about the science (sometimes to the exclusion of all else), is maybe a tad amoral, but has amazing, purple, prehensile hair!!
Fantastic all round - can't wait for the next season.
