Weekend movies
Jul. 27th, 2015 11:36 amFriday was Ant Man, which I mostly enjoyed. Bits of it were funny, bits of it were exciting, bits of it had depth - there was nothing really to complain about. It just didn't grab me and draw me in overall - but that may be me rather than the film. I liked Paul Rudd as an unlikely super-hero, it would have been nice for Evangeline Lilley to have more to do, though they may be fixed in later instalments. Michael Douglas was good, in a film I wouldn't expect to find him in. The effects were very cool, and the action was fun. So, good overall, I guess.
Saturday was Inside Out, which I also mostly enjoyed. The concept was clever and well thought out, the characters were appealing, and I very much approved of the message that all emotions have their uses and are important for being a well-rounded individual. Again, though, it didn't really engage my emotions to the extent I expected, which adds to my suspicion that I'm just not really connecting with things at the moment. It was fun, though, and affecting in places, and I loved the development of the interaction between Joy and Sadness. So, good overall again, I guess.
Sunday was Veronica Mars. We've been rewatching the TV show from the start and completed all the episodes on Saturday night, so we finally got to watch last year's movie last night. I have to say it was pretty underwhelming. The TV show is excellent, and we really enjoyed watching it again, though of course the ending was somewhat abrupt and incomplete. Oddly, the film didn't do much to solve that issue, since it picked things up nine years later, and didn't really fill in many of the gaps very well. The central question of Veronica's love life left me cold, since I had come to the conclusion that neither guy was really the right choice, and the hunt for the murderer dipped too far into melodrama for my liking. It was okay, but nothing special, and a bit of a disappointment after all the Kickstarter hype.
