Late June Reviews
Jul. 2nd, 2015 03:08 pmThe Elephant Man - went to see this at the Haymarket, admittedly purely because Bradley Cooper was starring. It turned out to be an excellent play, that stayed with me and improved on reflection. The way Merrick's deformities were transposed onto Cooper was very effective, and it was a committed performance. It was funnier than I expected, and all the central performances were very strong.
Robinson Crusoe - the only new game I played at this year's Annie-and-Dave-Con (I actually only played three games all day) and I wasn't overly keen. I do usually like collaborative games, as long as there are interesting individual actions to take, which seemed to be lacking here. The other players had all played before, so took the lead on strategy, and all I seemed to do was place my counters on the board occasionally and then take them off again. Would perhaps be better if I understood the game better and got more actively involved in the planning stages, but not a game I would be rushing to play again.
