Earth to Echo
Aug. 3rd, 2014 04:13 pmToday's cinema trip was to see Earth to Echo, which was basically ET with smart phones and a camcorder.
It was cleverly put together and well-written, though, with two incredibly likeable characters (the boy who did most of the filming suffered from not being on screen much and ended up being a bit forgettable, and I thought the late inclusion of a girl into the group was unnecessary and I didn't like her much). Alex, though, was almost painfully appealing, while Munch was hilarious and adorable by turns.
Echo himself also didn't get a huge amount of time to establish himself as a character, but was very intermittently very cute.
The ending was initially a bit disappointing, but I've since come to the conclusion that anything else would have been far less credible, and it held an important message about the potential transience of friendships and importance of maintaining connections, even when people are separated by distance.
The necessarily shaky camera work was a bit nausea-inducing at times, but it held together very well and suited the content so as to be excusable.
It's not going to set the world on fire, but the film had some lovely touches and a couple of very good young actors who managed to add some welcome emotional weight and humour to an otherwise very light story.
