Silent Dragon by Andy Diggle (and others) is a short graphic novel set in a future Japan where the Yakuza are trying to re-establish the honour system of the samurai against corporations who have Westernised the nation.  Within that scope, it's actually a very personal story of a samurai cast out from his clan, bent on revenge and winning the love of his old master's wife.  It's pretty bleak, but powerfully drawn and with some very interesting visual concepts.

The Promise and The Search by Brian Dante di Martino (and others) are two quite large graphic novels set in the Avatar: Last Airbender universe directly after the end of the excellent cartoon series.  They continue the story in interesting ways, and the characters are mostly well-drawn and very close to their TV counterparts.  I didn't like everything they did with the story and characters, but both novels were good fun, and it was interesting to have the creators' annotations in the margins.  They are both beautiful hardback books, with gorgeous illustrations - though a bit heavy!

Wool by Hugh Howey is the first collection of stories in the Silo series, and it is really excellent.  I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the audio version, and can't wait to get the next book in the series to find out what happens next.  It tells the story of a society living in an underground silo in the knowledge that the outside world is toxic after some apocalyptic event.  The society is rigidly controlled and questions are discouraged, the punishment for disobedience to be sent outside to clean the sensors that provide the view for those inside - and then to die.  Questions are inevitably asked, however, and it turns out that the wold as a whole is somewhat different to what the Silo inhabitants have been led to believe.  It's not exactly a wildly original concept, but it is executed brilliantly.
