The Nano Flower
Apr. 1st, 2013 03:05 pmThis week's audiobook was The Nano Flower by Peter F Hamilton, his third and final Greg Mandell book.
I liked the fact that it was set fifteen years after the end of the second book - it was really interesting to see what had happened to the characters in the interim, and to have their priorities be completely different to previous books in the series. The complexities of the plot lost me a bit towards the end, though, and I'm not sure I fully understood what was going on, but Toby Longworth's narration pulled me through and I mostly really enjoyed the book.
[SPOILER ALERT]
I was disappointed by the use of a major cliche, though. One of the characters was a mercenary, who had a pregnant girlfriend and had decided to give up her dangerous lifestyle and settle down to be an ordinary citizen. She was pulled into "one last job" by a friend asking a favour - so of course she got horribly killed at the end. Sigh. At least I saw it coming, so I was well prepared when it happened, but it was rather annoying.
Still, I shall probably keep the rest of my Peter F Hamilton audiobooks in rotation (even though they're not read by Toby Longworth), because they are good, pacy tales to spice up the commute. I don't think I'd want to read any in hard copy, though - too heavy!
