The Hobbit

I went into the Hobbit with some reservations but also some expectations, and mostly came out contented.

I certainly enjoyed the film.  The acting was fantastic (particularly Martin Freeman), there were several sections that lived up to the expectations raised by a Peter Jackson film set in Middle Earth (the introduction of Bilbo to the dwarves, the fight/flight through the goblin warren, riddling with Gollum), and the scenery was spectacular.

I have to agree that it felt unnecessarily padded, though.  A few too many lengthy scenes of the dwarves running away from things, for example, perhaps the inclusion of one or two too many extra characters (Radagast stands out here as rather superfluous, despite is awesome rabbit sleigh).

It was wonderful revisiting this world and some old, beloved characters, but I can't see myself watching this film over and over again, like I do with the Lord of the Rings films.

But then, there are very few films of which that is true, so perhaps I'm being overly harsh.  I am definitely looking forward to seeing the next one (and would be persuadable if someone suggested watching this one again prior to viewing the second), and maybe that's all one should expect of the first film in a new trilogy.
