Rebellion by James McGee is the fourth in the Hawkwood series, and takes Hawkwood right out of his usual London environs and into the heart of Napoleonic France.

The plot is based on real events - a French general attempting to fool Paris into thinking Napoleon has been killed in Russia so he can take over the government.

Unfortunately, crow-barring Hawkwood into real historical events meant he wasn't actually in it all that much, and didn't do very much when he was.  This, in combination with the absence of all the usual peripheral characters in London, led to a less engaging and less entertaining story than in previous books in the series.

It still had its moments, but it didn't really feel like a Hawkwood novel.  Hopefully, future instalments will return Hawkwood to his exciting post as a Bow Street Runner.
