Olympia and Last Things
Dec. 22nd, 2010 01:23 pmThe Olympia Horse Show on Saturday was lots of fun, as usual. There was quite a nasty accident near the start when one of the Under 23s showjumpers fell off and got slightly trampled by her horse, but she was apparently okay, and there were no more mishaps during the rest of the day. The dog agility trials were as entertaining as ever and the Shetland Pony Grand National is worth the ticket price alone, so the Ukrainian Cossacks, the Household Cavalry Musical Ride and the Masters Showjumping were just added bonuses, as far as I was concerned! I think in future I might try and get in earlier to see some of the stuff in the morning and then take a break around lunchtime to miss the youngsters' showjumping because that's always where the accidents happen and it makes it bit nervewracking. Still a fabulous day overall, though.
The Four Last Things by Andrew Taylor is another random book I got from BookMooch. For a thriller, very litte actually happened, but it was still quite interesting. It claimed on the back to be an exploration of what makes a psychopath, but it turned out that the character whose background was examined in detail actually wasn't nearly as bad as his partner in crime, whom we learned very little about. The backstory elements were definitely the focus, and well written, if a little unpleasant in places, with the present day kidnapping being rather a non-event in some ways. Interesting, and compelling enough to get me through to the end, but I won't be getting the other two in the trilogy.
