The Devil You Know review
Aug. 19th, 2010 11:59 pmMike Carey wrote Lucifer - my all-time favourite comic series, and one of the best things I've read in any medium.
So, I have to admit I came to his first novel, The Devil You Know, with rather high expectations and was bound to be disappointed.
Don't get me wrong - the tale of Felix Castor, a professional exorcist in a world where ghosts are a dime a dozen, is quite a good one. The hero is eminently likeable and makes for a very companionable narrator, with a good combination of angst and humour. The plot is engaging, the pace good, and there's enough distinction to proceedings to prevent the book from being entirely run of the mill.
However, it wasn't overly original - and, while it made for a generally entertaining read, there was nothing special or impactful about it. And I just know Carey can do so much better. I will be getting more in the series, and will be happy to read them if they're all like the first - but I can't help hoping for more as the series progresses.
