Dr Thorne is the third in Anthony Trollope's Barsetshire series, though it doesn't follow on from Barchester Towers at all, and the only connection is that a couple of the characters from that book are mentioned here and there (though they don't actually appear).

I didn't enjoy Dr Thorne as much as Barchester, because it's really only a one-note story - whether two of the characters will ever be able to get married - rather than the multi-strand soap opera of the previous book.  It's still 550 pages of glorious Trollope prose, but it did get a bit repetitive and I was rather wanting to scream "get on with it!" towards the end.  As with all the Trollope books I've read so far, the conclusion was easily predictable from about half way through - this is not necessarily a bad thing, as far as I'm concerned, but in this instance I thought the neatness of how it all worked out was a bit too contrived and didn't satisfactorily address the main issue of the book, namely money vs blood vs character.

Still, as mentioned above, it's still Trollope and therefore the act of reading it was still extremely enjoyable - it just seems he needs a slightly bigger cast of protagonists to really shine.
