Oscar Wilde short stories
Feb. 17th, 2010 07:20 pmI finished a collection of Oscar Wilde's shorter fiction yesterday - it was an interesting read. The first few stories were very much as I expected - witty, satirical and written in his inimitable eloquent style. I particularly enjoyed The Canterville Ghost, telling of a war of attrition between a 16th century ghost and the American family who buy the mansion he inhabits. The later stories, though, were in the style of traditional fables or fairy tales, and most of them were rather depressing - the humour and the eloquence were sorely lacking, so my enjoyment of the book tailed off towards the end.
