Ah, Canada!  As many trees and mountains and lakes as one could wish for!

Anyway, I have finished my first holiday book - The Lollipop Shoes by Joanne Harris.  It's the sequel to Chocolat, which I haven't read, so it was interesting to see how the characters and world set-up differed from the film version of Chocolat, with the addition of a different storyline.

I can't say it was the most engaging book I've ever read - the chapters switched POV between three different characters, none of whom I really liked very much, and the narrative had a very odd relationship to the past and present tense, switching between them with very little reason, which was rather off-putting.  It also seemed strange for the magic to be real, when in the film it was more to do with observation of people than actual spells.

Still, it was interesting enough to keep me reading to the end, and a lot of the peripheral characters were very well drawn.  I don't think I'll be buying any more of her books, and I've donated this one to the bookshelf in the hotel atrium, but it certainly wasn't *bad*.
