Cary Grant and The Surfing Penguins
Sep. 1st, 2007 04:43 pmHis Girl Friday - another black and white classic added to my DVD rental list in a fit of retro curiosity. A typical Cary Grant caper movie, with him as a newspaper editor trying to stop his ex-wife from quitting as a journalist and marrying someone else. Fast-paced and frenetic, allowing both leads to display their comedic talent, though I found the ultimate message, that people can't change even if they want to, a little depressing.
Surf's Up - more animated penguins, though both less traumatic and less message-heavy than Happy Feet. It took me far too long to figure out that the otter was being voiced by James Woods, but overall the film was quite entertaining, if a little lacking in excitement or character development. The mockumentary style was an interesting structural choice, though it didn't make much sense (why would the camera crew be making a film about the main character *before* he did anything noteworthy?) and I'm pretty sure it would have made the film boring for younger children.
