I borrowed the first few Falco books by Lindsey Davis several months back and finally got around to rereading the first one the other day.

I remember the relationship between Falco and Helena being the main reason for reading the books and, indeed, the first one doesn't start getting good until she turns up.  In fact, I wasn't really enjoying it at all to begin with.  The narrator (Falco) is extremely flippant, which was initially annoying and later very incongruous with the incredibly unpleasant things that started happening.  The story got more interesting and the tone slightly more serious as it went along, and there are a lot of things hinted in it that I remember developing into major plot points later in the series.  However, I think if I'd read The Silver Pigs for the first time now, I wouldn't be moving on to Book Two.
