I'm not sure why I decided to read the second in the Stravaganza series by Mary Hoffman, but I'm really glad I did, because City of Stars was excellent. It had a lot more depth and more plot than the first one and took the story on much more than I'd thought it would. All the characters from the first book were in it again, albeit in smaller parts, and there was a whole host of new and interesting characters as well. It was much better paced and much more exciting, and the fact that it was all about horses certainly didn't help!

It did try to address the problem I had with the first one (the treatment of the protagonist's parents), but it did so in a way that was a bit too neat and rather unsatisfactory, while at the same time inflicting the same treatment on a different character's father. So, I was still a little upset by the continuing portrayal of parental grief.

However, overall, I really enjoyed this book and will now definitely be reading the third one.
