Sucker Punch review
Apr. 10th, 2011 01:10 pmWell, what can I say about Sucker Punch, other than that I really wish I had that 100 minutes of my life back.
On a completely shallow level, I might have enjoyed the first two thirds more if I had found any of the women remotely attractive but, unfortunately, in the supposedly broad range of types on show, none of them hit any of my buttons.
I had been led to believe by multiple sources that the film lacked enough plot or character depth for any engagement on an emotional level, but unfortunately that also turned out to be untrue for me. Whilst the situations the girls found themselves in were patently ridiculous, and the visuals were very stylised, I found the characters (particularly Rocket) well-rounded enough to be affecting, which made the last third of the film really rather unpleasant.
I didn't go as far as Dave's reaction regarding misogyny, but I did find the whole thing vaguely distasteful and largely depressing, a view that was encapsulated rather aptly by the credits at the end, which declared it to be "A Cruel and Unusual Production".
Still, the company was good, so the evening wasn't a complete bust! :o)

I went expecting a computer game and got a rock video instead. Other than that it was much as I expected, cool visuals, hot girls (except for my trying to forget Emily Browning was Violet Baudelaire not long ago) and dark twisted faerie tale. Odd ending but otherwise groovy.
As to misogyny, apparently Emily Browning had something to say on that score which makes sense to me.
