It turns out that early Barbara Kingsolver is just as good as recent Barbara Kingsolver, which makes me even more excited to read the rest of her back catalogue.  She somehow makes the most mundane of things really beautiful and interesting - I wish it was a skill I had (fear about my OU creative writing course has begun to sneak up on me...).

The Bean Trees tells the simple tale of a girl, a baby (not actually hers), a cast of wonderful characters in Tuscon, and lots of horticulture (and tires) - not really things I have a lot of interest in normally, and yet I loved every page.
