The Losers review
May. 31st, 2010 06:13 pmThe Losers turned out to be exactly what I'd hoped - an action movie in the style of Lethal Weapon or Die Hard, with just the right combination of thrills and humour. I haven't enjoyed casual violence so much in *years*. Annoyingly, the best bit in the whole film was revealed in the trailer, but it still had me laughing out loud in more than a few places, and I've put the first volume of the comic book on my Amazon wishlist, to see what the original is like.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan was cooler than I'd expected as the leader of the group, and it turns out that Chris Evans is much better suited to the nerdy role than the action hero role, and he was my favourite character, with the sexy Latino sniper Cougar coming a close second.
The only things that let it down were the somewhat irritating one-dimensional bad guy (Jason Patric - oh, how the not-so-mighty has fallen even further), and the tendency of the heroes to complain a lot when injured, which was good but then emphasised the ludicrousness of them completely ignoring the effects of said injuries five minutes later.
I've always enjoyed films about a group of mismatched individuals going up against ridiculous odds and generally blowing shit up, and this hit all the right marks of the genre. I think the makers have been extremely clever to get their film released just before The A Team, and I can only hope the latter measures up in comparison.
