I decided to get the book of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, to see how far it differed from the film.  The answer is, really not very much at all.  Percy is younger in the book, there's a bit more padding around the story, a few more characters that didn't make it onto the big screen, and a slight change in the identity of the overall bad guy.  Other than that (all things you'd expect from a book to film adaptation), it's been transferred pretty much wholesale.

I would say the book was slightly better than the film - more depth of charater and more of an arc of development - but not by much.  It was a quick, entertaining read, but I don't think I'll be getting any more in the series.
