People have been telling me for years that I ought to watch Casablanca. It wasn't that I was actively against it, it's just that I'd never had an easy opportunity until recently, and I wasn't prepared to go out of my way to find a copy, because I wasn't that bothered.

So, when I joined the online DVD rental thingie, Casablanca was one of the first films to go down on the list. Whenever it came up in conversation and somebody was horrified that I'd never seen it, my standard response was, "It's on my list." However, since it was everybody else's idea for me to watch it, rather than my own, all the films I picked to put on the list myself went above Casablanca in order of preference.

Two years on, it finally turned up in the post, boosted up the list by continuing insistence from my brother, [livejournal.com profile] cholten99 and [livejournal.com profile] corone. Unfortunately, I was in Buffy mode at the time, so it got bumped to the bottom of the viewing list yet again, my preference always veering to Joss Whedon (or Lord Of The Rings as well, actually), and the poor Casablanca DVD just sat on the arm of the sofa, being ignored.

Finally, last night, as [livejournal.com profile] cholten99 was making dinner, he said, "Here's a radical thought - let's watch Casablanca tonight." So we did. (In my defence, I would like to claim that I was planning to watch it this afternoon while he's in Colchester, but now we'll never know if that would actually have happened.)

So. I've seen it. It's good. Let's move on, people. :o)

Me, I've *still* never seen Casablanca. I'm not absolutely sure (I may have forgotten one) but I think It's a Wonderful Life is the only black and white era film I've seen all the way through. Me bad :( .

And The Wicker Man has been sat in the 'to watch' pile for a couple of months now (typically, the Guardian gave it away for free this weekend).

In mitigation, though, I *have* seen a hell of lot of French films.
