California reviews 3
Feb. 8th, 2009 04:36 pmThree more films to review - one viewed in the cinema on Saturday afternoon, and two more viewed on my plane journey home:
Coraline - the style was really cool and the shifts in tone were very effective, but it was all a little too day-glo to be really creepy, and I didn't feel emotionally connected to the characters at all. There were some nice touches, though, and I particularly liked the cat.
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street - visually stunning, mostly excellent performances, but wow, I'd forgotten how depressing Sondheim can be. Johnny Depp was amazing, as always, and I thought Helena Bonham Carter turned in a nuanced performance with a difficult role, managing to make Mrs Lovett both sympathetic and callous.
High School Musical 3: Senior Year - this was fantastically cheesy, and the most overly idealistic portrayal of high school I have ever seen. However, if you just gave yourself up to it, it was also hugely entertaining, with some great dancing and a very cute central couple.
