So, I bought Twilight by Stephanie Meyer on an impulse, to see what all the fuss is about.  Bad mistake.

Bella sighs over how beautiful Edward is.
Edward angsts about how his presence puts Bella in danger.
Bella gets into trouble.
Edward swoops in and saves her.
They declare undying love for one another.

Repeat ad nauseam for 434 pages.

To begin with, it was quite amusing, but by the end I was begging for it to be over.  Most of the characters were really annoying, the utter lack of subtlety was incredibly depressing, and the endless repetition of Edward's perfect face, Adonis body, overwhelming eyes - okay, I get it already, he's very pretty, can we move on, please?

I find it upsetting that so many teenage girls are apparently completely obsessed with these books.  I do wonder, though, what I would have thought if I'd read it when I was fifteen.  It doesn't bear thinking about.

At least I now know I don't want to go and see the film when it comes out.  A faithful adaptation would frankly be nauseating.
